Ahimsa, is a Sanskrit word that you might hear in a yoga class. If you are anything like me (pre yoga), you probably haven’t really studied up on your Sanskrit lately. Ahimsa means non violence, which includes physical, mental, emotional, and can even be applied to using words to harm.
Recently, I got a message from someone, who came across harshly towards me. My immediate reaction, was anger. I hadn’t done anything to this person in a malicious fashion, so the negativity, was a bit jolting to my sensibilities.
After rereading the message a few times, I decided to wait to respond until I was a little more level headed. I want to actively practice ahimsa in my life. I want to put my yoga studies to good use in my daily life. So, I waited. I let it all sink in. I tried to understand how this comment came about.
While I don’t think I could ever fully understand, I realized that it really doesn’t matter. The thoughts of others towards me, should not affect me. I can only try to be a good person. It is not always going to reflect in others, as I would like it to. You can’t please everyone, but you can try to be the best version of yourself and practice ahimsa. Choose your words and actions wisely.
